A Long Tall Weekend

By Sam Corbett

It's 6:30 in the AM, on Saturday, October 16th, 1999, still mostly dark, you may ask what somebody going to bed a mere 4 hours earlier is doing out of bed, but there is a reason. I climb into my car and head towards Williamsport to meet up with Dylan Flipse and Tom Smith(who I thought I had to pick up in Mansfield and had an interesting talk with his mom about Baltimore when I stopped). From Williamsport we climbed into the Space Van with Dylan's younger, annoying little sister who wouldn't shut up the whole trip.

The trip was fairly uneventful until we got to Baltimore where Pimpin' smooth's (Rachel's friend where she was staying, actually named Tim Huggins) mom decided to leave out a highway on the directions causing us to drive through a good deal of Baltimore before finding the correct highway. About 40 minutes after this we managed to hit a large bump at 70mph, causing many of the Space Van's early Y2k bugs to surface. The van ran fine until we pulled into a gas station and turned it off while Rachel called for better directions. As we try to pull out of the parking lot, we realized the van wouldn't do much other than click and beep (trying to communicate in Morse code?). Dylan called his dad while a random redneck tried to give us a jump-start, claiming that was the problem (never mind the fact that lights worked and it beeped). At this point Dylan started to call AAA while Tom and I continued to fiddle. At this point I decided it would be a good idea to use my Jedi powers and kicked the bumper, The van started next try. We then drove across the parking lot turned the van off and tried to turn it back on with a severe lack of luck. Once again, I kick the bumper and it starts up. We decide at this point it might be good to get a full tank of gas in case we only have one more start in the van so we pull up to the pumps, get $21.42 in gas, the van doesn't start, I once again kick the van, it starts. At this point we decide it's a good idea to take Rachel to Pimpin' smooth's house. After finding it with no problem we leave and head to Glen Burnie, where we were staying.

Later that evening, at around 7:15, we head to the 9:30 Club for a TMBG concert. The club is in a fairly ghetto area of DC and parking was pretty much full. We ended up going in the Out part of a Hospital parking lot to park there. We proceeded to the club on foot where we stood in line for a good amount of time before they let us in. After being bored for a little bit inside, Tom and I decided it would be an excellent idea to flip the Flipse without realizing that this would cause change to magically appear on the ground so we could collect it. When the TMBG roadies where setting up for TMBG I noticed a blue glowing coming from one of their pieces of equipment and had to yell to Dylan, who was a good 15' away at this point "DYLAN, BLUE LED!" while pointing frantically towards the stage. After a bit that the opening band came, You Were Spiraling came on. Their lead guy could do some pretty funky shit when it came to the keyboard. Then after a little bit TMBG came on, it was a very good concert, which included a Beach Ball being thrown around for a good while until the guy directly in front of me deflated it. It also involved some drunk people, most notably a drunk guy that decided he'd be cool if he through his shirt nicely on stage. A couple of drunk chicks behind Tom and I singing well off tune as well as a couple words off and believing they where bigger than us and belonged in front of us where also quite annoying. Tom managed to get a set list after the concert with his Go-Go Gadget arm. Jeff Roberts managed to get John Linnell's coffee and handed out drinks, making us all immortal.

After the concert we went to the space van with Autumn yelling shotgun, and me yelling blitz, then Tom and I raced to the van, getting there at approximately the same time and fighting quite strongly over shotgun. A few moments later Jeff joined in the fray and I managed to escape and climb in the back door of the Van between the two bucket seats and into shotgun before Tom managed to get in a strategic position with the door open. I did manage to lose a shoe to Tom in the process, which ended up a good 10' outside the Space Van. Dylan, enjoying the whole fight more and more by the second, helped me out by moving the Space Van over to a point where I could grab my shoe as Tom hung out the back, trying to kick it further away. Before and after this point I had shotgun the majority of the trip.

We then proceeded to the Tastee Diner, which was not the best Diner I have ever been to, yet at three in the morning, with a very sarcastic waitress is a good time. We were hanging out with some of the #tmbg Efneters at this point and it was decided that there should be a Peace treaty so I took a napkin and my trusty Super Sharpie and wrote "Peace Treaty!!" on the napkin. It was then signed by Flipper1 (Undernet) and Jish (Efnet). This napkin was eaten (completely) by Jeff. After this another napkin was drawn up and was signed by Flipper1, and Jish and then under Flipper1, Shadey and summerB signed and under Jish, Modnar signed. I also signed this treaty mainly as a witness to make it more official. Jish took this treaty home so he could scan it. What Jish and the rest of the Efneters don't know and has been told to the Underneters is that the treaty is in no way legal or binding. After this we drove back to Autumn's house where we spent the night.

We woke up around 10:45ish in the morning and sat around Autumn's house for a good long time having breakfast before we left to go retrieve Rachel from Pimpin' smooth's house and shut the Space van off in his driveway. Believe it or not the van wouldn't start. Pimpin' smooth's dad came out and hit the starter about 50 times with a hammer and it started right up. We decided it would be a good idea not to turn the van off again until we got to Dylan's house. This grand idea lasted about 40 minutes until we pulled into the Best Buy parking lot, planning on leaving Rachel in the car so the three important people could go in. Dylan of course turned the van right off. We all went into Best Buy and chilled for a while then went out to the van which started without too much trouble. On the way home we stopped at a McDonalds for a bathroom break and Dylan, not being able to turn the van off is forced to leave it on. Tom gets back well before Dylan, jumps in the driver seat and drives around the corner, which is always good for a laugh. The whole trip totaled right around 39.5 hours for me and ended with me hardly being able to get up the next morning and possibly even being a little bit sick.
