ThanksLANing v.2

Conclusion - The guestlist is updated with info on what actually happened. You can see that a full 25 people showed up for at least some of the event with a computer. We also had a good half dozen or so total people around a bit with no PC, but they were sorta ok too. We had at least 14 or so people going in some games of UT. The server and network handled it just fine, though there was lag right when we started some games. Lots of CTF, some Deathmatch, some Domination, and lots of Rocket Arena were the modes of choice. Motocross Madness 2 also got some play, but the game just seems kinda buggy, it locks up too many computers and tends to drop too many people from network games. People also got Starcraft and Quake 2 going. I tried to set up a Subspace server but failed. (Ah, nostalgia) There was also a decent amount of Tony Hawk 2, though that's a one player deal. We got $45 of pizza the first night and $115 the second night. I'd also like to point out that there was a green bedsheet hanging on the front of my house with "ThanksLANing v.2" written on it in duct tape letters. My dad kicked some ass in terms of letting us have free run of the place, supplying some drinks and snacks, and paying the power bill. I met some cool new people, Rocky came with Jack, Brandon came with Aaron and other Mansfield types, and the three guys from Hazleton who showed up for some of Saturday night. I'd love to LAN with anyone who was there at any time in the future. Hope everyone else had as good a time as I did.
Time for another ThanksLANing. It's a LAN party at my house (I'm Dylan Flipse, aka Flipper1), in Williamsport, PA (In the northern central part of the state.) that I have on the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning after Thanksgiving(24th-26th of November). It's a lot of fun, we pretty much all know each other, but anyone who wants to LAN for a few days is welcome to show up. Just email me at dylan@flipse.com and we can talk about it. We'll probably get started sometime in the afternoon (3 or 4PM-ish?) on Friday and you can stay as long as you want, up until sometime Sunday morning.

The logistics are quite a bit easier this time around. I know where to get those long tables, and we already know all about which outlets in the basement are on which circuits. Unreal Tournament (Remember playing the demo and the buggy beta version of the full game last year?) and Motocross Madness 2 are the games that I have in mind, but we can play whatever you guys want. I've got a PII 450 that will do nicely as a dedicated UT/whatever else server. Quite a few of us have been off at colleges this year, so I expect the filesharing will be plentiful. We will have a net connection this time around, you may remember a little incident with CIH and my server box last year. Here's a little diagram of what's goin on with the Compound.

(We can probably get more network stuff if needed.)

Things to remember-
A computer with a working network card, 10Mb or 10/100. (Our switches are 10/100, and seriously, why suck ass at 10Mb when 10/100 cards are so bloody cheap?)
All of your computer's parts. (Sucks to be missing a mouse, keyboard, power cable, etc)
A mousepad! An amazing number of people forget these.
Headphones, if at all possible. For one, the sound of UT from fifteen different comptuers is cool, but a bit much after a while. Also, it's to your benefit if people can't hear when you're under water, going up an elevator, etc. Furthermore, if we all have speakers, it eventually turns into a speaker pissing contest, and that's the sorta thing that tends to leave Tom's right ear partially deaf for a few weeks.
Software and files of all kinds. (Don't forget CD-Rs!) Part of the event is sharing files really freakin fast. I'm bringing the entire shared contents of the Case network. You never know when what someone else might be interested in what you have.
Cat5 Networking cable, mucho importante. Bring...whatever you can get your hands on, but 10-15' or more would be nice. You'll wanna label your stuff. Cat5 all looks pretty similar. Masking tape around cables with your name written on it works fine.
